Within a day, the number of confirmed infections with the new corona virus in the People's Republic rose by more than 700 to 2,744, according to state television, citing the Chinese authorities. With around 50 cases outside of China, almost 2,800 cases have thus far been confirmed worldwide.

The number of infected people in China can continue to rise sharply, as there are around 5800 suspected cases for which the diagnosis has not yet been completed. State television reported that 461 of the patients in China were seriously ill. In the eleven million metropolis of Wuhan and the surrounding province of Hubei alone, the condition of another 69 patients was described as critical.

The transmission capacity of the pathogen is increasing somewhat, but the authorities' knowledge of the new virus is still limited, said China's National Health Commission.
