Garlic helps against coronavirus: what's behind the myth?

The fight against the corona virus is taking on strange features. China recently took measures to transport garlic in large quantities to the crisis area, as it is said to help against the virus.
Does garlic help against the corona virus?
To endorse the statement of the WHO (World Health Organization): No, garlic does not help against the virus. There is no evidence of this. If you take a closer look at the tuber, it is understandable why the myth persists. Because although garlic is powerless against the corona virus itself, it has some properties as a medicinal plant that are interesting.

In addition to the substances that lower blood pressure, garlic also contains oils that are excreted via the respiratory tract. Hence the bad breath after eating garlic. These oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties that are good for preventing respiratory infections.
Since the corona virus is mainly transmitted by a so-called droplet infection, which is primarily absorbed through the respiratory tract, it is understandable where the myth comes from. If the airways are protected, infection should be less likely.
While garlic has positive health effects and a light, protective effect on the respiratory tract, that alone is not enough to protect against the very highly contagious corona virus.
So in order to protect yourself effectively against the virus, you should rather resort to proven means according to the WHO recommendation: meticulous hygiene of hands and face and keeping people who are obviously sick away.
