German retailers are shrinking

In Germany the economy was not hit as hard, with retail sales declining 5.3 percent in April compared to the previous month. Compared to the same month in the previous year, real sales fell by 6.5 percent. Analysts had expected significantly larger setbacks of 12.0 percent month-on-month and 14.0 percent year-on-year. Sales had already dropped sharply in March.
