Gummy bears are missing from many shelves

Gummy bears are missing from many shelves

What these brand names really mean

VIENNA. A look at the shelves of local supermarket chains gives cause for concern. It's about price wars with branded goods manufacturers. For example, Haribo products (gummy bears and the like) can no longer be found on all shelves.

In the dispute over purchase prices that has flared up again in Germany, Edeka CEO Markus Mosa accuses the large food manufacturers of significantly excessive demands. "For 2023 we have massive price demands from the big brand groups on the table again. And that in addition to the price increases that were already enforced in Germany last year. We are fighting against that," said Mosa in an interview at the weekend.

Spar: We will come to an agreement

Year after year, large chains such as Rewe and Spar also bitterly haggle with suppliers over prices and conditions in Austria. These price negotiations in the food trade are regularly fought with hard bandages. Spar spokeswoman Nicole Berkmann also confirms this: "We negotiate hard in the interests of our customers and have always been able to come to an agreement in the end." There would be no Haribo bottlenecks, according to Berkmann.

According to Edeka, the additional price demands from suppliers for 2023 already amount to 1.2 billion euros in January. That is only from half of the brand manufacturers, many more demands would follow. Price increases of around 1.5 billion euros were already incurred in 2022. The original demands of the industry were more than twice as high.

The "Lebensmittel-Zeitung" had previously reported that the negotiations between German industry and trade escalated again at the beginning of the year and the price discussions from the previous year continued unabated. According to the trade journal, Edeka competitor Rewe also expects an escalation. An easing of the ongoing price disputes is not in sight. There was no reaction to the price war from Rewe Austria today. Haribo has de facto imposed a delivery stop, according to local media.

You can find confirmation of this when you go to a Billa branch in Austria (belongs to Rewe). Haribo, and with it the much-loved gummy bears - are currently not found on the shelves, or only sporadically. "Unfortunately we don't have it anymore," says the sales staff near Enns. But there are comparable products.
