Johnson tanzt nicht nach der Pfeife Trumps
Britain has high hopes for a free trade agreement with America. However, the Huawei decision shows: Prime Minister Boris Johnson opposes the wishes of the American president.
The decision of the British government to involve the Chinese network supplier Huawei in the expansion of the 5G networks, but to keep them away from core areas, may be technically reasonable at the moment. And it will keep the relationship with China from getting cold.
Obviously, the Johnson government does not want to be drawn into the looming cold war between China and America. She is doing the same as her European partners, whom the London decision offers orientation. However, the concern about espionage and sabotage shouldn't be off the table, least of all from an American perspective.
And that's where it gets interesting. President Trump has repeatedly embarrassed Prime Minister Johnson. He now has to learn that the famous man opposes American wishes, does not bow to threats and does not remove Huawei from the list, even if security considerations play a role.
Will Trump resent him and retaliate accordingly, for example in negotiations for a free trade agreement? Could he even exclude the United Kingdom from closely exchanging intelligence services?
It is possible, but not very likely. Should Washington follow through on his threats, you will see how steadfast Johnson is. In any case, London should recognize that a free trade agreement with the EU is always more important for the country.
