Opel plant in Rüsselsheim gets a new model - gearbox construction ends

The car manufacturer with a large plant in Vienna will soon build three car models in its main plant in Rüsselsheim, namely "Insignia", "Astra" and the PSA premium brand "DS Automobiles". At the same time, the production of gearboxes and forgings in Rüsselsheim is due to end next year.

The German carmaker Opel will focus on vehicle production in its main plant in Rüsselsheim and will soon build three models there. Opel will be producing a new model of the PSA premium brand DS Automobiles in Hesse from summer 2021. The car maker belongs to the French PSA group.

The Insignia limousine is currently rolling off the assembly line in Rüsselsheim. The next generation of the Astra compact model will be added at the end of next year. The plant employed 2,400 people at the end of the previous year.

"The investment will strengthen vehicle production at the Rüsselsheim location in the long term with an expanded product range," emphasized Opel boss Michael Lohscheller. The investment sum is said to be in the millions. Opel relies heavily on electromobility.

Rüsselsheim: Production of transmissions ends

At the same time, according to company information, it is planned to "let the construction of gearboxes and forgings in the Rüsselsheim plant" expire in the course of 2021 ". Around 200 employees are still working in these areas. The management now wants to start discussions with the social partners. An exclusion of operational redundancies is generally agreed until mid-2025.
