Geologists initially reported a magnitude of 5.3 for the quake. It happened at 6:24 a.m. a few kilometers away from the Croatian capital Zagreb. An aftershock at around 7 a.m. reached a magnitude of 5.0.
According to media reports, numerous houses in Zagreb were damaged - rubble fell on parked cars. The cathedral in the city center was also affected: one of the two spiers came loose and crashed.
EU Council President Charles Michel expressed dismay at the accident. He assured Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković that the EU was ready to offer help and support, Michel said on Sunday morning via the short message service Twitter.
