US Air Force develops world's largest wireless ad hoc network


The US Air Force's Global Strike Command is getting a wireless ad hoc network from Persistent Systems. The goal is to establish a unified safety net for 400 operational Minuteman III nuclear missile silos with intercontinental range secured in remote areas in the United States. According to the company, the new security network will cover an area of 25,000 square miles (64,750 square kilometers), making it the world's largest wireless ad hoc network. Cost: $75.5 million.

Important for communication to military bases
For the US Air Force, this enables 75 operations centers and connects more than 1,000 security force vehicles. Task forces will be able to stay connected to US military bases over the network and see the exact location of all security forces on a map. Critical data can also be exchanged via the network.
