WHO speaks of the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic in the coming decades, the United States and Mexico report record infection figures. In Germany, hospitals are preparing for a second wave.
The World Health Organization (WHO) expects the Covid 19 pandemic to be "protracted" and to remain a "public health emergency of international importance". That said the WHO Emergency Committee on Saturday. "The pandemic is a century-long health crisis, the effects of which will be felt in the coming decades," said WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday. "Many countries that thought they had weathered the worst are now struggling with new outbreaks."
In the United States, more than a thousand people died of coronavirus infection on Saturday for the fifth day in a row. In the state of California alone, more than half a million people have now been infected with Covid-19. The state of Texas reported 9539 new infections on Saturday. The total number of corona infections in the state rose to 430,485 confirmed cases. In Florida, whose pandemic arrangements are being disrupted by the approaching tropical storm "Isaias", the number of deaths declined somewhat.
In Britain, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is considering closing off the Greater London area to avoid a second national lockdown. If the infection rates continue to rise, the quarantine rules for travelers could also be tightened, as the "Sunday Telegraph" reports.
