Wuhan and 12 other major cities in the province of Hubai have already been cordoned off - more than 43 million people in China are directly affected by the corona virus.
Over forty million Chinese, half of Germany's population, are currently affected by the restrictions on their freedom of movement and acute risk of infection from the corona virus.

The number of infected people has recently risen to over 900, and 27 people have already died of the lung disease caused by the virus. The first cases from Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong and the USA are also known.

In addition to the closure of long-distance traffic, Beijing has now taken another drastic measure to contain the epidemic: Travel agencies throughout China are no longer allowed to offer package tours for domestic and foreign customers. In addition to the transport and manufacturing sector in the industrial region, the entire Chinese tourism industry is now also negatively affected.

In Wuhan, the city of eleven million people, which is the traffic and production center of Central China, all public transport connections to and from the city, i.e. via train, plane, ferry and bus, have been shut down. The city lies on the Yangtze and Han rivers.

The spread of the current corona virus is reminiscent of the SARS pandemic from the winter of 2002/2003, which claimed the lives of around 1,000 people. Even then, a previously unknown coronavirus had appeared, which was later referred to as SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV). SARS stands for "severe acute respiratory syndrome". Severe acute respiratory syndrome poses a life-threatening threat, particularly for older people and people with health problems.

The risk of infection is very high because the corona virus can not only overcome the species barrier, but is relatively easy to transmit via droplet infection. The virus can also survive up to 24 hours outside of a host.

Another risk is the incubation period of two to seven days, which means that the people infected with the coronavirus only notice symptoms such as high fever, cough, hoarseness and sore throat after a few days. In the advanced stage, there is inflammation of the lungs and acute shortness of breath.

Since there is currently an increased travel activity in China as part of the Chinese New Year, there is a risk that the coronavirus will spread to travelers far beyond the affected province of Hubai.

Passengers at airports and train stations are currently being checked using electronic clinical thermometers and thermal imagers all over China. However, due to the incubation period, not every infected person can be discovered immediately in this way.

There is no curative drug therapy for the viral disease. The patients are treated with cortisone, antivirals and antibiotics. The latter are said to alleviate the additional bacterial infection of the respiratory tract.
