Wie zwölf Konzerne den Weltmarkt beherrschen

The automotive industry is changing - some experts say that nothing will work without mergers in the future. The Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot-Citroën recently took to heart. As a result of their merger, they have become the third largest car group after sales.

There has been a wave of consolidation in the automotive industry for a few months, almost years. "We are experiencing the greatest changes in decades," said Ferdinand Dudenhöffer from the Car Center Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

A lot has happened in the past years: PSA took over Opel, BMW and Daimler cooperate in the car sharing business and Toyota seeks contact with Subaru. The two car groups Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot-Citroën (PSA), which have already emerged from large-scale mergers, recently confirmed their merger.

The potential of the new cooperation can be seen when you look at the number of sub-units of the new group: eleven brands belong to the new transatlantic alliance.

The market is experiencing a concentration
The industry is currently experiencing a high level of concentration as a result of the mergers. A few groups share a lot of brands. The largest groups are the Volkswagen Group, the alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi, and the cooperation between Fiat Chrysler and PSA.
