The World Health Organization (WHO) announced a new high on Saturday evening with almost 300,000 registered new corona infections within 24 hours.
Overall, more than 21 million infections have been documented worldwide since the new Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus became known at the end of last year. According to experts, the number of unreported cases is considerable. This is also due to the different test capacities: in some countries many people are tested for the virus, in others only a few.
According to WHO statistics, 755,786 infected people have died worldwide so far.
The previous record was set by the WHO on July 31, with just over 292,000 new cases reported within 24 hours. In absolute terms, the heavily populated countries USA, Brazil and India are the hardest hit countries with more than 100,000 new cases each within seven days.
Infections are rising again in Italy.
