Have you ever heard the saying “There is nothing new under the sun”. The same exist in the referral field. Many referral gathering strategies might be deemed to be new, but are really not. Anytime a referral coach talks about sending gifts and cards to customers after the sale, they are actually talking about old school referral techniques.

Joe Girard wrote a book in 1978 titled “How To Sell Anything To Anyone”. In his book he talks about sending greeting cards and gifts, through the mail, to potential and existing customers. He didn’t invent it, it has been around for years, but he just used it to the max, and built a huge multi-million dollar sales record in the automobile industry.

How Joe Girard helped me make millions... 

You will find the answer to how we managed to use Joe’s system to make millions of dollars. We loved it so much we automated it for you.

Even though Joe was in the automotive industry the principals transcend almost any industry. I used them for over 35 years in my economic and life insurance consulting business, and it worked perfectly.

The whole problem with any system is that it’s a system, and requires it to be done systematically otherwise it will not work. For any process to work it has to be coordinated and integrated together. The hardest part that we ran into when installing Joe’s system was to use it all the time, and make sure that all the parts manually were worked together. Once we accomplished this, it worked like clockwork.

What Joe Girard’s system entailed was to send greeting cards and gifts once per month, to each customer or potential customer. This could get fairly expensive but Joe’s explanation was that if you wanted to build your business and take it to the higher levels, you need to spend the money.

When we got over the hurdle of getting the system going we realized that it got expensive. In Joe’s book he said that depending on the price of your products you would recover your cost very quickly. We realized that we boosted our sales so radically and rapidly that we recovered our cost for the year with several sales. Although to be fair, the life insurance industry is a very high commissioned industry so our cost recovery was quick. If you are in an industry where you are not making that much per sale you will want to limit your mailings. We found that the contact took 3-5 personal contacts minimum per year to be effective which we maximized.

Let’s define Personal Contact. An ideal personal contact is when you can reach out and tap the person on the shoulder and say, “I like you”, “I appreciate you”, etc. Since you can’t physically tap the person on the shoulder, the next best way is to send a greeting card and/or gifts, that  are totally unexpected, through the mail. When the person opens the card or gift they feel a sense of appreciation and since it comes from you it’s a personal sense of gratitude. When anyone appreciates another there is a sense of thanksgiving that becomes a bond between the sender and receiver. 

The secret to the process is to not panic, but keep pushing through the process and then the results will happen. We live in a world of instant gratification so if it doesn’t happen overnight many abandon it for something else, then say it doesn’t work. I know it works and made millions of dollars using it.

It’s Automated

To give you a brief history of when we started in 1980, there was no technology to use except mass, impersonal, printings. We had to do everything manually and had to designate a staff member handle the process. We had to order the cards, and gifts, with a logo on them but were unable to specifically print the name of the recipient on the card or gift. We were able to hand write the name and a message on the card but the gifts were totally impersonal but  still effective. We were also able to use return receipt requested, to make sure it got delivered. You can still do this today and it will work. This process has decades of proof that it works, and Joe used it to get into the Guinness Book Of World Records. The proof is overwhelming and un-refuted. It just has to be done, thats the simple fact that keeps anyone from achieving their maximum financial potential. The simple fact is that almost everyone knows their product of service really well, they just need people to tell their story too.

Enter automation! As time moved on we were able to find resources that would automate our process. Contact managers came into use, now called CRM’s. These CRM’s made the process of remembering easier, but still didn’t replace the physical part of fulfillment.  As time moved on [2003] we were able to find a company that would do this but eventually they got too expensive. They were a network marketing company and because of this they had a huge price tag so they could pay their distributors.

Bill Bateman I"m a big Joe Girard fan. Growing up near Detroit his story was simple and effective. I still send greeting cards (using SendOutCards) and they are still effective - but compared to email of course, very expensive.
