Caraway seed is one of the oldest spices in the world, a delicious, irreplaceable and health-giving spice.
The fact that caraway is medicinal was known in the ancient stone age or in ancient Egypt, when it was used not only as a spice in food, but also as a medicine itself. Nowadays it is used mainly in European but also in Asian cuisine, it has become popular in the Middle East.
It belongs to the most commonly used types of spices, it can not do without meat, pastries or potatoes. It is not only good for the tongue, but it is also good for digestion and can be helpful in the fight against other health problems.
Although it probably originated in Asia Minor, it quickly spread and became part of most of the world's cuisines. Unlike many exotic and rare spices, it was available to everyone, even in Bohemia, caraway was commonly grown in meadows. So soon people learned to use its taste in cooking and effects in folk medicine.
This spice acts very well as a means against bloating. In the intestines, it acts antispasmodically. Ideal in such a case is to try caraway tea. Pour a teaspoon of crushed or ground caraway into a mug, pour boiling water and let stand for ten minutes. Then strain, sweeten with honey to taste and drink up to three times a day. For children, a third of a teaspoon and one cup of tea per day are enough.
If you want to lose weight, caraway can also help you. Years ago, in one study, they investigated its effects on fat burning. If you take yogurt with a teaspoon of ground caraway seeds for breakfast in the morning, the metabolism should work better. It should also relieve you in case of water retention, because it belongs to diuretic herbs.
Caraway boasts antiseptic and antifungal effects, can be a solution for bad breath, plaque on the tongue, but also relieves toothache. It can help with both respiratory diseases and asthma, facilitates expectoration and improves breathing.
Caraway oil is used for urticaria, eczema, as well as skin irritated by sunburn.
Spice for seniors
In the diet should not miss especially the elderly. With age, the ability to digest food may deteriorate, and properly selected spices will help overloaded digestion.
For its aromatic aroma, it was considered a plant that protects against evil spells. Caraway is a biennial plant. It grows wild on our meadows throughout central and northern Europe, in Siberia and in Central Asia. Of course it is also grown in Czechia, practically in all countries of central Europe and elsewhere.
More can be written about the pluses of this relatively common spice. The seeds contain a lot of iron - one teaspoon of crushed caraway contains 1.4 mg of iron, which is 17.5% of the daily recommended dose of iron for adults.
