Karel Hynek Mácha  (1810-1836)
was a Czech romantic poet who is considered the founder of Czech poetry.
He lived in first half of 19th Centruy, in the time when Czech nation lived in the Austrian Empire and when efforts were made to maintain the Czech language in the German environment.
His lyrical epic poem Máj (May) was pubslihed in 1836 shortly before his death.It was judged by his contemporaries as confusing, too individualistic, and not in harmony with the national ideas. The author himself published the poem with the remark that the main purpose of the composition is to celebrate spring nature.
Mácha's genius was discovered and glorified much later by the poets and novelists of the 1850s. "Máj" is now regarded as the classic work of Czech Romanticism and is considered one of the best Czech poems ever written.
Mácha was an avid traveler. He mostly walked and looked for romantic places connected with the history and beauty of nature.Mácha was also endowed with artistic talent. More than 100 drawings and watercolors  have been preserved. 

His poem was tranlasted to many languages including English, German, Polish Esperanto etc.

Late evening, on the first of May—
The twilit May—the time of love.
Meltingly called the turtle-dove,
Where rich and sweet pinewoods lay.
Whispered of love the mosses frail,
The flowering tree as sweetly lied,
The rose's fragrant sigh replied
To love-songs of the nightingale.
In shadowy woods the burnished lake
Darkly complained a secret pain,
By circling shores embraced again;
And heaven's clear sun leaned down to take
A road astray in azure deeps,
Like burning tears the lover weeps.

In Praha, capital of Czechia, on the hill Petřín is famous statue of Mácha where lovers come on
1st May, bring flowers, mostly lilacs and than kiss there or under a cherry tree....
