Schloss Elmau - charming place in the German Alps

Tucked into the Bavarian Alps and surrounded by  forest, this artistically minded luxury retreat has, for more than a century, been through all the highs and lows German history has to offer.

Schloss Elmau (Castle Elmau) was already the site of the 41st G7 summit on June 7–8, 2015, and now it hosts the G7 again 48th summit from 26th to 28th June 2022.

But before it hosted politicians it was many years an important cultural place with an interesting spiritual history.

Schloss Elmau, built by the philosopher and theologian Johannes Müller and architect Carl Sattler between 1914 and 1916 is a four-story national monument with hipped roof, tower and porch, situated between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald in a sanctuary of the Bavarian Alps, Germany. 

After Germany’s defeat in World War II, Müller lost control of Schloss Elmau. From 1947, the premises served as a home for displaced concentration camp survivors,operated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
From 1957, Schloss Elmau became best known for chamber music, with the Amadeus Quartet, Benjamin Britten, Julian Bream, Yehudi Menuhin and Alfred Brendel performing at Schloss Elmau. 

Dr. Johannes Müller (1864–1949) who built this castle was a protestant theologician who has built it s as a “space for personal freedom and communal life” . Under the proud Alp peaks he created a place for taking vacation from everyday life, staying silent or listening to music. Schloss Elmau continues in this tradition and offers the guests very rich program till today.

With the touch of timelessness it functions as a luxurious spa place under breath taking scenery of German Alps.

According to the German government, the castle meets "all logistical and security requirements for a G7 summit location".

The group of leading Western industrial nations includes Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Canada. The G7 countries account for about a third of the world's economic output. About ten percent of the world's population lives in them.

On the occasion of Germany's G7 Presidency in 2022, Deutsche Post AG is issuing a special postage stamp with a face value of 85 euro cents with the first issue date of June 23, 2022. The design is by the graphic designer Thomas Serres from Hattingen.
