Main facts about monkeypox

The name monkey smallpox comes from the first proclamation of the virus in monkeys imported to Denmark in 1958. The first case of transmission to humans was in 1970 in the Congo.
Unusual and unprecedented monkeypox outbreak was announced in the second half of May 2022. The virus has natural home in wild animals somewhere in the rain forests of Central Africa and already a low number of cases were detected in Europe.

How does the disease spread?
Transmission of the virus to humans occurs through contact with an infected animal, human or contaminated material. The virus enters the body through the respiratory tract or mucous membranes, and also with skin injuries.
Transmission from animal to human can occur through bites, scratches or even the preparation of wild animal meat.
Transmission from person to person occurs, according to experts, mainly through droplets, long-term contact is necessary. Other ways of human-to-human transmission include direct contact with bodily fluids or infectious lesions and indirect contact with lesion material, e.g. through contaminated clothing or laundry.

Monkey pox is an infectious disease caused by the monkey pox virus (Monkeypox virus, MPXV), which occurs in some species of animals as well as in humans.
Viral infection manifests itself in a similar way to human smallpox, albeit mostly with milder manifestations. Initial signs include increased temperature (fever), headache, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes and feeling tired. This is followed by a rash-first on the face-in the form of blisters, and then scabs. The rash passes through different stages of development and may resemble chickenpox or syphilis.
The incubation period ranges from 6 to 21 days, the symptoms persist for 2-4 weeks.

From what is in the introduction of the article we see that the rate of spread of the disease has increased many times. And so we need to think about how this is possible and if it is natural. Vaccination against smallpox should be effective against monkey pox. However, smallpox was eradicated practically 45 years ago and this vaccination is therefore not used any more.

! ! ! For the first time the virus of monkeypox is being found in people with no clear connection to Western and Central Africa ! ! !
