Viktor Frankl wrote a powerful book about his experience in a nazi prison camp. He was a psychologist who studied human behavior around the people in the prison camp. In the book, he mentions that the people who died in the prison camps were those people who were not able to identify a purpose in life. Those that survived a clear purpose defined which created a strong will to survive the horrors of the camp.
