This post is intended for individuals who are new to blogging and/or content writing and want to immediately write effective content that will eventually result in attracting traffic to a blog or website. If you’re not already familiar with search engine optimization – “SEO” for short – it is the process that you’ll need to become very adept at if you want to get your website noticed and picked up by the major search engines – Google, Yahoo and Bing.
SEO content writing is a way to attract search engine traffic and get your information noticed by the top search engines so you can get found by others.Before you even begin writing about your intended topic – Note -- I use the word “intended,” because what you initially thought was a great topic may not actually turn out to be that great after you perform the first step in SEO content writing -- keyword research.Keyword research in its simplest form is words that people type into Google, Yahoo or Bing to search for information. You’ve probably done this yourself a thousand times and didn’t realize what you were actually doing at that time.
So, let’s say we’re looking for homemade ice cream recipes. We type this phrase into Google and like magic, 22,800,000 results come up. You can now peruse each entry until you find one you like or you can refine the search by being more specific with your phrase, such as homemade chocolate ice cream recipes.If your website or blog was one of the 22,800,000 results that came up for this phrase, you’d be pretty happy, right? If you came up in the first 10 pages of this search, you’d be really happy, right? So, how do you get there?Answer – Keyword ResearchTraffic is the number one goal that everyone with an internet presence strives for. You need to know what it is that people are searching for so you can attract visitors to your blog or website. This is how you develop a following and brand yourself. Begin by choosing a keyword research tool that you can get comfortable with using so you can get ahead of the competition and be writing content for your site that will get you noticed.There are many free keyword research tools that you can utilize and I’d highly recommend to anyone just starting out that you use a “free” tool while you’re learning about keyword research. You may even find that you don’t really need a “paid” version to get what you’re after. Try a few free keyword research tools while you’re learning so you can investigate their features, results, etc., and determine which one you like best.A really good way to start your keyword research and get your feet wet is to look for “free keyword research tools” on Google. So, back to our homemade ice cream recipes example. Once you decide on a keyword research tool, you’ll take your phrase – “homemade ice cream recipes” and type that in. Here’s what you might come up with – 11 variations of that phrase. Here are two examples – “recipes for homemade ice cream” and “easy homemade ice cream recipes.” Note – you can also try doing the same search using the word “home-made” to see if you get any different results.Here’s the knowledge you gained through this exercise -- 11 results with your phrase, 11 potential topics to write content on that people are actively searching for and potential topics that you hadn’t thought of for developing your content marketing strategy.Another facet of keyword research is that the results are broken out so you can see how many people are searching for a particular phrase on both a monthly and daily basis --9,720 people search for homemade ice cream recipes a month and there are 324 searches daily – 270 individuals searched this term on Google.No matter what topic it is that your blog or website pertains to, performing keyword research can make all the difference in how fast your site attracts visitors. You can spend a million dollars on what you consider to be the most attractive website or blog on the internet but if you’re not getting any traffic, then it’s totally worthless, as no one is seeing it except for yourself.Keyword research is the first step in writing good content that will drive traffic to your blog or website.
