Saxophone Colossus was recorded in June of 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in New Jersey. This was Sonny Rollins’ breakthrough record and remains the jazz saxophonist’s best-known album. Rollins was accompanied by Tommy Flanagan on the piano, Doug Watkins on the bass, and Max Roach on the drums.
The vinyl record for Saxophone Colossus has become a valuable collectible. Not only did it establish Rollins as a premier jazz artist, not many of these records were pressed. The Library of Congress certainly seems to agree on the record’s value, as it selected the record for preservation by the NRR in 2017.
