129. Frank Wilson – Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)

Posted by Bill Rippel on March 22, 2021 - 2:20am

Year: 1968
Record label: Motown
Worth Today: $30,000*

Frank Wilson was one of the best producers that Berry Gordy had on Motown records, so when Wilson decided to branch out into singing himself, tensions became frayed. He recorded one single, “‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do)” in 1968, but it was never released. Rumor has it that Gordy ordered all copies to be destroyed.

Another rumor pins the destruction on Wilson himself. Wilson decided he’d rather focus on producing, and he trashed the demos himself. The scarcity of the single, combined with the high music quality—it was one of the most popular records of the Northern Soul times—makes Do I Love You one of the most valuable records on this list.

It’s said that there are only a handful of copies left. One of them sold in England in 2009 to an anonymous buyer for £25,742 (roughly $30,000).
