Though Newk’s Time didn’t take off the way other Sonny Rollins albums (like Colossus) did, this album from the jazz saxophonist is still a classic. Rollins recorded it in 1957 for Blue Note Records, his third album with the label. Blue Note released Newk’s Time in 1959.

The “Newk” in the title is a reference to Rollins’ resemblance to Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe. In addition to Rollins on the tenor sax, Wynton Kelly (piano), Doug Watkins (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) are featured on Newk’s Time. Jazz star Miles Davis makes a guest appearance on the first track, “Tune Up.”
