26. The Who – The Who Sell Out

Posted by Bill Rippel on November 22, 2020 - 12:32am

Year: 1967
Record label: Track Records
Worth Today: $1,100*

The Who has provided us with some great tracks over the years, although they’ve never been taken quite as seriously as a rock band as some of their contemporaries. Their third studio album had an unusual concept as tracks were coupled with fake commercials and announcements.

The Who Sell Out claims to be broadcasted by Radio London, a pirate radio station. Radio London operated from a ship anchored 3.5 miles offshore in the North Sea. The title of the album refers to the fact that The Who had made real commercials, something that some longtime fans felt was an affront.

While some of the albums were pressed in stereo, half were pressed in mono and included a butterfly poster. Those that managed to acquire one of those fluttering copies and have hung onto it over the years could part ways in exchange for a cool $1,100.
