59. Joy Division – An Ideal For Living

Posted by Bill Rippel on December 27, 2020 - 2:36am

Year: 1977
Record label: Enigma
Worth Today: $3,515.62*

Part of the reason that Joy Division’s An Ideal for Living has become so pricey is because it is rare. The early cover of the post-punk band’s vinyl recorded featured controversial imagery of a Hitler Youth member holding a drum. Bernard Sumner drew the art, which was quickly removed and replaced by artwork depicting scaffolding.

An Ideal for Living was recorded at Pennine Studios. The band’s budget at the time was just under $500. Joy Division released the album on Enigma, its own label. An Ideal’s twelve-inch vinyl, which came out a few months after the seven-inch, was released on Anonymous Records.
