It took almost a year for artist Nick Drake to record Five Leaves Left, which was released in 1969 on Island. The studio at which Five Leaves Left was recorded had several levels to it, causing interesting background sound. Drake played in the center of the studio, seated on a stool and surrounded by instruments.
The vinyl record’s title referred to Rizla cigarette papers, whose package had a printed note near the packet’s end that said “Only five leaves left.” Sadly, Nick Drake passed away just five years after recording Five Leaves Left.
