Also called a “ferrotype” or “melainotype”, a tintype was a photo made by creating a positive on a sheet of metal that has been coated with dark enamel. This photography trick was invented in 1856, and, though time has passed, these tintype depictions are now worth a lot of money, depending on who they feature.

One featuring the legendary gangster Billy the Kid is worth millions. It was the first picture taken of the outlaw, and it was one of the few he allowed. Billy the Kid had a short life. The gunfighter was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett, his longtime nemesis, at age 21. The tintype photo is a rare depiction of the notorious nineteenth-century criminal.
