Danish architect Philip Arctander made a name for himself when he exhibited in 1942 at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition. He would later become the director of Denmark’s Danish Building Research Institute. Arctander collaborated with furniture giant Ikea to create these Clam Chairs in 1954.

The vintage red clam chairs (so called because the covered back and seat were shaped like an open clamshell) were first designed by Arctander in 1944. Ikea followed up with its own replica in 1954. Later, the furniture company sold the chairs for $64,000 in London. Other vintage Ikea pieces that have sold for big bucks include the Vilbert Chairs, Karin Mobring Amiral Easy Chairs, and more.
