Thomas Chippendale was a cabinet-maker in London, and his famous pieces were designed in Neoclassical, English Rococo, and mid-Georgian styles. The most identifying features of Chippendale furniture are the legs and feet, as most legs are finished cabriole, ending in ornamental feet.

Now, Chippendale furniture sells for thousands at auction, even if it’s just Chippendale-style, not authentic. This Kentucky desk sold for just under half a million dollars. It was carved for Captain John Cowan, and its carver is unknown. The desk was the most expensive piece of Kentucky furniture ever sold at auction and the second-most-expensive piece of Southern furniture as well, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
