Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich is responsible for funding the restoration of the beautiful Russian island, New Holland. New Holland Island was created in the 1700s, and it took its name from its then-similar appearance to Amsterdam. New Holland had shipbuilding facilities and canals that made it the little brother of Amsterdam.

After the early twentieth century, the Island fell into disrepair. It would take nearly a century before it was restored. In 2016, Abramovich and his work began the restoration of the naval prison, foundry, and commandant’s house. New Holland, which The Daily Telegraph described as “Roman Abramovich’s romantic island dream,” is slated to be finished by 2025.
