Revolutionising Healthcare: Novo Nordisk and AWS Harness Agentic AI for Faster Drug Discovery

The journey to bring a new life-saving therapy from concept to clinic has historically been one of the most complex, costly, and time-consuming endeavours in modern science. Developing effective treatments for chronic diseases often takes over a decade, requiring researchers to sift through immense biological datasets, identify viable drug targets, and rigorously test candidates in physical laboratories.

To overcome these traditional bottlenecks, pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk has expanded its strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). By embedding autonomous AI agents, cloud infrastructure, and computational biology directly into scientific research, this partnership aims to drastically shorten the timeline from drug target identification to the first human trial dose.

A Co-Innovation Hub at the Heart of London

Central to this expanded relationship is the establishment of a joint co-innovation hub at Novo Nordisk’s existing facility in London. AWS has been designated as the pharmaceutical company's preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner, creating a collaborative physical workspace where software engineers and life science researchers work shoulder to shoulder.

The London hub brings together Novo Nordisk R&D personnel alongside AWS engineers, AI specialists, applied scientists, and professional services teams. The goal is to eliminate friction between computational prediction and laboratory synthesis. Rather than handing off data across siloed departments, scientists and engineers can now refine computational models in real time based on actual laboratory test results, creating a seamless, iterative research loop.

From Documentation Automation to Deep Science

Novo Nordisk is no stranger to artificial intelligence. Across its enterprise operations, the company has already deployed generative AI tools to streamline routine administrative and regulatory tasks.

Through a internal platform built on Amazon Bedrock, more than 25,000 employees have created custom chatbots for thousands of internal use cases. The business has also transformed its clinical documentation process using Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 model via Bedrock. Work that previously required between 40 and 50 staff members taking up to 15 weeks can now be completed in minutes by a focused team of three, with human medical experts conducting final reviews and validation.

However, the new agreement moves AI beyond enterprise productivity and places it firmly at the core of advanced laboratory science.

The Power of Agentic AI and Amazon Bio Discovery

The next frontier for Novo Nordisk involves transitioning from passive generative tools to active, multi-step agentic AI. Unlike traditional software, AI agents can make autonomous contextual decisions, run complex multi-tiered processes, and coordinate between distinct analytical tools.

Novo Nordisk is implementing key technologies to power this shift:

  • Amazon Bio Discovery: A dedicated service designed for computational biology that provides researchers with direct access to over 40 specialised biological AI models. AI agents can dynamically select and sequence these models to evaluate target interactions, design custom therapeutic molecules, and rank potential drug candidates before physical synthesis begins.
  • Amazon Bedrock AgentCore: Infrastructure that enables autonomous agents to operate securely across enterprise systems and complex data repositories. These agents orchestrate sophisticated multi-step workflows without requiring constant manual guidance from human operators.

By linking computational drug design with real-world physical testing, experimental outputs from laboratory assays can be fed back directly into the computational engine, continually refining the underlying AI models for greater precision.

Connecting Clinical, Genomic, and Imaging Data

A major obstacle in modern pharmaceutical research is data fragmentation. Clinical trial results, genetic sequencing information, and high-resolution biological imaging often exist in separate formats and systems.

Through this strategic partnership, Novo Nordisk will leverage Amazon Bedrock to build applications capable of seamlessly synthesising insights across clinical, genomic, and imaging datasets. Unifying these disparate data streams allows early-stage scientific discoveries to directly inform clinical trial design, helping scientists select the right patient cohorts and predict potential treatment efficacy much earlier in the development life-cycle.

To ensure rapid execution, AWS is embedding Forward Deployed Engineers directly within Novo Nordisk research teams. These specialists work on-site to build, troubleshoot, and optimise bespoke agent-based applications alongside the pharmaceutical scientists.

A Multi-Faceted AI Strategy for Chronic Diseases

While the AWS partnership marks a major step forward, it forms part of a broader, highly ambitious AI strategy for Novo Nordisk. The company continues to explore cutting-edge solutions across multiple platforms, including collaborations with OpenAI and access to Denmark’s Gefion supercomputer for high-performance computing workloads.

By uniting deep life-sciences knowledge with cloud infrastructure and agentic artificial intelligence, Novo Nordisk and AWS are establishing a new benchmark for pharmaceutical innovation—one that promises to deliver life-changing treatments to patients living with chronic conditions faster than ever before.
