

The overarching promise of Web3 has always been revolutionary: a borderless, permissionless financial ecosystem where anyone with a smartphone can access banking services, hedge against rampant inflation, and move funds across borders without traditional gatekeepers. Yet, behind the utopian messaging of decentralisation lies a stark, unpalatable reality.
In its current form, Web3 is often built for people who can afford to lose money learning how to use it. When sending a transfer requires a working knowledge of cross-chain bridges, gas token mechanics, slippage tolerance, and network compatibility, a single wrong click can wipe out a life's savings. If Web3 is truly to achieve global adoption, it must evolve from merely granting access to delivering genuine financial safety.
There is a fundamental difference between opening a door and making a space safe to inhabit. Web3 excels at the former. Anyone can generate a self-custodial wallet in seconds, bypass traditional credit checks, and interact with smart contracts on-chain.
However, permissionless access only answers whether someone can enter the system. Financial inclusion asks far more demanding questions:
This distinction matters because cryptocurrency is no longer just a playground for speculative traders or tech-savvy early adopters moving money they can afford to lose. In emerging economies where local fiat currencies face severe devaluation, inflation is rampant, and international remittance fees are exorbitant, crypto serves as an essential economic lifeline.
Consider sub-Saharan Africa, where on-chain activity surged to over $205 billion in recent years—with countries like Nigeria driving a massive share of that volume. For millions of people, stablecoins and decentralised payment rails are not a gamble; they are a vital mechanism to protect wages, support families, and trade across borders. Yet, forcing these users to navigate complex technical hurdles means pushing systemic risk directly onto the people least equipped to absorb it.
In traditional financial systems, mistakes are cushioned by customer support teams, chargeback mechanisms, and regulated safety nets. In Web3, the cost of learning falls entirely on the individual. Every user operates within an error budget—the amount of capital they can afford to lose while figuring out how a technology functions before using it becomes completely irrational.
To understand how unequal this system is, imagine two users completing an identical cross-chain swap that incurs a $25 fee due to network congestion and bridging costs:
From the perspective of a blockchain protocol, both transactions are processed identically. But from a human perspective, the outcome is vastly different. Fixed fees, irreversible transactions, and confusing network selections naturally penalise smaller balances. The less capital a user holds, the smaller their error budget is. A financial system that demands costly mistakes as an entry fee may be open, but it is far from inclusive.
The Web3 industry frequently presents users with a false dichotomy: either rely on a centralized intermediary that controls your funds, or take absolute self-custody and take complete responsibility for every technical decision alone.
In practice, true self-custody often imposes an overwhelming administrative burden. Users are expected to act as their own bank manager, security engineer, and network operator—managing seed phrases, approval permissions, gas balances, RPC endpoints, and backup strategies.
Choosing control over your assets should not mean accepting total isolation. Self-custody and product-led guidance are not mutually exclusive. A modern financial interface can—and should—protect the user without taking custody of their private keys:
By abstracting away background complexity, crypto applications can transform fragmented technical actions into safe, unified user experiences.
When a single individual makes an unpredictable mistake, it can be considered user error. But when thousands of users repeatedly select the wrong network, lose funds to unsupported contract addresses, or sign dangerous approvals, it stops being a client mistake and becomes a product defect.
The crypto industry’s historical answer to user error has been a call for more education: "Read the documentation, watch tutorials, and do your own research (DYOR)." While education is valuable, relying on it to fix poor product design is a flawed strategy. Sending $50 across borders should not require the equivalent of a diploma in distributed systems.
If an interface allows a user to confirm a transaction that predictably results in burnt tokens or astronomical lost fees, the interface has failed to provide informed consent. Interfaces must take responsibility for the complexity they have spent years pushing onto end-users.
Web3 has successfully built a global, decentralised financial infrastructure outside the traditional banking world. The next phase of adoption relies on a far less flashy, but far more critical challenge: making that infrastructure safe, intuitive, and usable for everyone.
Financial freedom cannot mean that access is open to all, but safety is reserved only for those who can afford expensive mistakes. Web3 will achieve genuine financial inclusion not when anyone can create a wallet, but when an ordinary person can use one without fear of financial ruin.
