X Chat launched by E.Musk

Posted by M H on April 29, 2026 - 6:50pm Edited 4/29 at 6:50pm

Musk launches XChat

chat app only for iPhones and iPads for now

After testing on a small group of people,

the social network X has publicly launched its standalone chat app XChat. It is currently only available for devices with the iOS (or iPadOS) operating system, at least in version 26. The user logs into the service with their account on the social network X. The new app allows for text messaging and audio calls, and also offers the option of group chats or sending messages that automatically delete themselves after a certain time.

According to X, messages in XChat are protected by end-to-end encryption. However, this may not be completely bulletproof. According to available information, X stores users' private keys (protected by a four-digit PIN) on its servers, while Signal, for example, stores them on the user's device. X also offers the ability to send private messages with other users (called Chat) in its main application (it also boasts end-to-end encryption). It is not yet clear what the relationship between this chatting and the new mobile application will be.

The design is in a "funeral style" frown

And now something interesting from Central Europe:

In the Czech Republic, the eponymous service Xchat operates, which was created in the mid-1990s and was taken over by Netcentrum (the former owner of the Centrum.cz portal) in 2000. It was subsequently transferred to the publishing house Economia, which sold the service to 42ideas in 2016. The company is made up of a group of friends who have come together with the goal of preserving the once iconic Czech service.

From Czech Wikipedia:

The XChat project was developed by a group of students at the Technical University of Liberec in 1996/1997. The first was a web chat, to which other services were gradually added on their own domains (Xmail – freemail, Xforum – discussion forums, Xpress – webmag and others). These were not part of the takeover of the service by Netcentre and remained on the original project (there the chat continued on the Xtalk domain).

Important question - enlightened

Who will probably sue whom now? Elon Musk, Czech founders of Xchat or Czech engineers will sue Elon ?

Thanks for reading

Simon Keighley Interesting to see X pushing into standalone messaging, but questions around encryption design and brand overlap could end up being just as important as the feature set itself.
