Energy Drinks: Don't Be Fooled

Posted by Bobby Brown on February 26, 2025 - 2:29pm

Energy drinks stimulate the sympathetic nervous system which is commonly known as the “fight or flight” response.

It is our body’s rapid involuntary response to dangerous or stressful situations. Each time it is triggered there a “flash flood” of hormones released that stimulate the body for action.

Energy drinks can cause the release of several hormones, including:

-Dopamine

A “feel-good” hormone that can increase concentration, energy, and sex drive. However, the more often you consume energy drinks, the less pleasure you experience from the dopamine response.

-Norepinephrine

Also known as the “fight-or-flight” stress hormone, a study found that a few sips of an energy drink can cause a 74% increase in this hormone.

-Cortisol

Caffeine increases the secretion of cortisol, which can alter circadian rhythms and interact with stress reactions.

-Adrenaline

Caffeine increases the circulation of adrenaline in the body

The only time I would possibly suggest an energy drink/ caffeine would be to stimulate the body for a big training session or a particular activity or sport.

But always first and foremost we concentrate on sleep quality, nutrition and the basics!

Sugar free or not they have shown that they are significantly unhealthy and unhelpful when it comes to fat loss and in particular the fat on the tummy.

In summary, energy drinks are at best unhealthy for you; at worst, they can be deadly. If you care about your health and the health of your family, your New Year’s resolution should be to get energy drinks out of your home and never bring them back. Your body has a tremendous ability to deliver the energy you need, if you give your body what it needs for health: sleep, good food, exercise and stress relieving practices.

Simon Keighley Thanks for the warning. When you give your body the right care, it rewards you with the energy you need to thrive.
