You’ve heard “10,000 steps a day” — but research shows you don’t need that many to get the biggest benefits.

A 2023 study found that walking around 8,000 steps per day was linked to the lowest risk of early death and heart disease. Going beyond that — 10,000 or even 15,000 steps — offered only small additional benefits.

Why? 8,000 steps (about 4 miles) is enough to:
• Improve heart health
• Support healthy blood sugar
• Reduce inflammation
• Lower risk of premature death

And the best part? You don’t need to do them all at once. Walking in short bursts throughout the day counts.

If 8,000 feels far off, start with what you can do. Even 3,000–5,000 steps daily already improves health — but aiming for 8,000 steps gives you the most bang for your effort.

It’s not about perfection — it’s about consistency. thejoytolive.com/bbrown/

Simon Keighley It\'s encouraging to know 8,000 steps provides such significant benefits without feeling like you have to hit a super high, daunting number every day - consistency truly matters more than aiming for an arbitrary, high step count.

M H My 8000 steps are only 4 kms, not 4 miles because I have short legs ! LOL, I hope it still counts !
