An End to Heart Disease?

Posted by Bobby Brown on May 29, 2020 - 9:45pm

Now I’ve got to the point where I think we can get almost complete control of cardiovascular disease, heart attacks and strokes by the proper use of vitamin C and lysine. If you are at risk of heart disease or if there is a history of heart disease in your family . . . or if you have had a mild heart attack yourself, then you had better be taking vitamin C and lysine. – Linus Pauling

In the US, heart disease causes 700,000 deaths each year—more than all forms of cancer combined.  Atherosclerosis, or “hardening of the arteries” causes most heart attacks and strokes and is found to some degree in almost everyone today, even babies. It doesn’t have to be this way.

Dr. Linus Pauling proposed a solution: vitamin C . . .

Thirty years ago, chemist Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel Prize winner and one of the great scientific minds of the 20th century, proposed that vitamin C deficiency is the major cause of atherosclerosis.

Among its more than 300 functions in the human body, vitamin C helps the amino acids lysine and proline to form collagen, a basic material in all body tissues, including blood vessels. An extreme deficiency of vitamin C will cause scurvy, where the body literally falls apart for lack of functional collagen.

Although the modern diet provides enough vitamin C to prevent fatal scurvy, Pauling pointed out that most people aren’t getting enough vitamin C to protect them from heart disease.

Local vitamin C deficiencies are commonly found in the arteries serving the heart and brain. The walls of these arteries are subject to extreme and continual stress, causing damage and necessitating continual repair. If vitamin C is deficient, the collagen necessary for this ongoing repair cannot be manufactured.

Without enough vitamin C, atherosclerosis begins . . .

Until repairs can be made, the body manufactures a sticky form of cholesterol called lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), to create a temporary patch.  But if repairs continue to be deferred, Lp(a) and other substances pile up on the artery walls and harden creating plaque, and atherosclerosis has begun. As more and more plaque accumulates, arteries become narrower, stiffer and less efficient, and there is an ongoing danger of pieces of plaque falling off to completely block an artery, causing a heart attack or a stroke.

Pauling stops, and even reverses plaque in the arteries . . .

Pauling found that he could stop plaque from accumulating, and even start removing existing plaque if he supplied the body with from 6,000 to 18,000 milligrams (6-18 grams) of vitamin C per day.  Meanwhile, the current Recommended Daily Allowance is 75 to 90 mg per day!

He got even better plaque removal by adding 3 to 6 grams of supplemental lysine. Lp(a) has special receptors for lysine. High concentrations of lysine in the bloodstream appear to pull Lp(a) out of existing plaque. It was later found that supplemental proline did the same thing.
