How many people that you know get frequent colds? Have allergies? Candida fungal infections? Or cancer, or any one of a number of immune or autoimmune illnesses?
If you’ve read Raymond Francis’ books, you may recall that people living in healthy traditional cultures regularly lived into their hundreds without getting a single cold or flu, let alone cancer.
But weak immunity is common these days, and how could it be otherwise? When people stayed in one place, their immune systems adapted to local pathogens. Now we travel all over the globe, exposing ourselves to exotic pathogens and carrying these infectious agents to yet other locations. Though our lives are made richer by exposures to other cultures, our immune systems are continually bombarded with novel viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites from all around the world.
Meanwhile, most of us have taken antibiotics, which permanently weaken our immunity. About 80% of the immune system resides in the intestines, where good bacteria are at work 24-7 defending us against pathogens. But antibiotics kill off these protective bacteria along with the bad actors, and even one course of antibiotics can permanently change and weaken your gut’s population of immune-supporting bugs.
A high sugar diet, all too common, will suppress immunity even further.
Coconut oil contains fatty acids—caprylic acid, capric acid, and especially lauric acid—that separately and together have been shown in multiple studies to reduce and even eliminate many common pathogens, including bacteria that cause stomach ulcers, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, gonorrhea, gum disease and cavities; yeasts and fungi that cause ringworm, athlete’s foot, diaper rash and candida; and viruses that cause colds, flu, herpes, measles, mononucleosis, hepatitis C, cytomegalovirus, SARS and even HIV. Coconut oil and coconut meat kill or expel parasites such as tapeworms, lice, and giardia.
And, according to coconut expert Bruce Fife, ND, CN, coconut oil differs from antibiotics in that 1) it doesn’t kill the good bugs, and 2) pathogens don’t become resistant to it.
While a tablespoon of coconut oil isn’t a therapeutic amount, it can help create a healthier inner environment that supports good bugs while suppressing the bad ones. Use it for a stir-fry, or melt it over steamed vegetables for a delicious way to support your beleaguered immune system.
