Don’t Hurt Yourself! Stretches and Exercises to Do Before You Move to Avoid Injury

Ready to move- don't forget to stretch

One of the things that you do not expect to happen when you move is get injured. However, there are many injuries that do occur based on improperly lifting, straining a muscle, or simply lifting something that is too heavy on your own. These injuries can cause a lot of strife for you come the day after the big move and may even cause you to miss a day or two of work because of it.

Whether you are healthy or out of shape, it is important that you prepare yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally for your next move. Below, these stretches, and exercises can help you avoid injury as you do move.

ALWAYS Stretch Your Muscles

Moving heavy items into a moving truck is a big deal, even if you are strong and have lifted heavy items before. Before you lift any type of boxes, bins, or furniture, you want to take some time to stretch out your hips, arms, legs, and back. You will use all of these muscle groups as you lift and move items, so it is important to make sure you get in a good stretch.

Some exercises that can help you include exercises that target your mobility such as high knee lifts and squats. You should also stretch your arms across your body to make sure that your muscles do not tire quickly during the move.

Break Regularly and Stretch

Even though you stretch prior to your move, you will need to continue to stretch throughout your move to ensure that you do not injure yourself. You should take a break every hour or two and give yourself a few minutes to stretch.

If you feel that one of your muscles is starting to hurt or feel tired, do not hesitate to go ahead, and stretch it out.

To help you make the most of your quick stretch break, you can utilize a wall or door frame and stretch your feet or back until you can feel the muscles stretching. You can also repeat similar stretches that you completed previous to the move.

Drink Water to Stay Hydrated

While you may crave some soda or juice, you want to make sure that you are drinking water to keep yourself hydrated. If you do not have any water on hand, you can drink something such as Powerade or Gatorade to replenish some of your electrolytes.

Soda and high sugar drinks can cause you to dehydrate, and this can lead to injury of the muscles as well.

Ice and Massage Your Muscles When the Move is Over

Once the move is over, do not underestimate your ability and make sure to continue to care for yourself – it will pay off. You should massage your muscles, take a warm bath, or shower, and then ice any sore muscles or areas of concern.

If you follow the above tips, stretch, drink water, and care for your muscles after the move, you will be able to enjoy an injury free move.
