The average adult body is around 65 percent water. A sufficient daily intake of water is necessary in order for the human body to function properly. In general, an adult should consume eight to ten, 8 ounce glasses of water each day. That amount can vary according to an individual’s weight and their activity level.
We understand the importance of a healthy, hydrated body. Keeping your body hydrated helps it perform at its optimal levels. But getting enough water isn’t always as easy as it sounds. Although water is easily available, if you’re not accustomed to consuming the recommended amount of water you need each day, you may be wondering how you can possibly get the recommended amount of water in your diet each day. Here are some great tips to up your water intake.
Easy Access
Simply having water in an accessible location can serve as a reminder to drink more water. If you work at a desk, keep a bottle of water at your desk and take frequent pauses to drink water. When you leave home, always take some water with you to drink while you are running errands. Arrange your refrigerator so that water is the easiest thing to get to when you open the door. Drinking really cold water burns more calories. That fact may encourage you to make water your choice of drink for the day.
Timer
Whether you’re at home, work or out and about during your leisure time, it’s easy to forget to drink water often. To make it easy on yourself, set a timer to alarm to remind you to drink a full 8 ounces of water as soon as the timer goes off.
Drink at designated times
Following a schedule can assure that you get the amount of water you need each day. You can begin the day with a glass of water. Include a glass of water before and after each meal on your schedule. Always drink water following an exercise routine. If you have a planned activity that you do each day such as walk the dog, drink water before, during or after that regular activity. Have a glass of water at each transitional period of the day. For example, drink a glass of water as you transition from home to work, from household activity to TV viewing or as you travel from one location to another.
Get Creative
Drinking plain water can get boring. Experiment with flavoring options to find those that you like best. Add some lemon, lime, orange, cucumber or whatever fruit or vegetable you like to your water. If you freeze pieces of fruit and add them to your water you have a delicious treat on a hot summer day.
Warm water can be enhanced with honey, lemon, mint or ginger to make it a flavorful alternative to the average glass or bottle of cold water. You might also want to include some herbal teas in your daily plan.
You can also get a portion of the water intake you need from certain fruits and vegetables. Watermelons, oranges, cucumbers, celery and tomatoes are a few of the options with a high water content.
