Maybe It's Your Liver!

Posted by Bobby Brown on May 29, 2020 - 9:44pm

The most common complaint bringing patients to doctors’ offices these days is low energy.  Most often, if you go in complaining of fatigue, after a battery of tests, you will be told there’s nothing wrong with you.

Well, although it may not show up in their tests, there is something wrong! Low energy means not only that you don’t have the energy to do what you want to do; it means your body doesn’t have the energy to do what it needs to do to keep you healthy.  In fact, the amount of energy your body can make may be the single most important measurement of your health. It’s important to get to the bottom of what’s going on.  (A doctor who specializes in functional medicine may find answers that conventional doctors don’t.)

One of the most common reasons for low energy today is a sluggish liver. The liver is the largest and most hard-working gland in your body, performing over 500 essential functions, and when it isn’t up to par, every other system in your body suffers as a consequence.

The ultimate multi-tasker, your liver filters 3-4 pints of blood every minute, removing and detoxifying harmful substances, while it metabolizes carbohydrates, fats, and proteins for energy; controls hormone balance; participates in the immune system; synthesizes blood clotting factors; and many other odd jobs.

Ordinarily, the liver is extremely resilient, but our livers today are under extraordinary stress. With exposure to tens of thousands of industrial chemicals in our environment and diets that no longer provide all the nutrients required to support detoxification pathways, our livers can’t keep up, and virtually every US citizen today is in toxic overload, accumulating on average not one, not ten, not one hundred, but an EPA estimate of 700 industrial chemicals in our bodies!

This takes a tremendous toll, and virtually all of us suffer from an overloaded and sluggish liver. Over time, the liver becomes less efficient and less able to heal and regenerate itself. It starts to deteriorate and shrink, and as it does, we begin to feel more and more fatigue.

But it’s possible to bring our livers back to good function. Eating a good diet and taking high-quality supplements; avoiding toxins (see any of Raymond Francis’ books), sweating out toxins with exercise and saunas; taking flax oil, which binds with oil-soluble poisons that lodge in the liver and carries them out of the body; eating cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli and cauliflower, and sulfur-containing foods like eggs, garlic and onions, that support the liver’s detox pathways; and drinking plenty of pure water will all help to optimize liver function.
