Men's Skin Care Tips: Dos and Don'ts for Better Skin

Most guys do not know the ins and outs of skin care. And if you think that men's skin care is just rubbing your body wash on your face, then it’s time for a reality check. Chances are, your body wash is not doing your skin any favors.

Skin care does not have to be complicated. If you are thinking that it is either body wash to the T-zone or a forty-five-minute daily skin care ritual, you will be glad to know that there is a happy medium to that gets you putting your best face forward.

Let’s keep things simple, there are a few basic steps every man should follow for his daily skin care maintenance. Here are our essential dos and don’ts for better skin:

THE DOS

SPF UP

Most people skip layering up on the SPF daily, but harmful UV rays from the sun actually have negative effects on your skin. Leaving your skin unprotected not only puts you at risk for melanoma but also makes your skin vulnerable to premature aging and dullness.

One of the easiest skin care tips is to apply SPF before heading out the door. Putting on the SPF only takes a few seconds and give you that crucial coverage that not only protects you from skin cancer but gives your skin a brighter look while keeping your skin looking young. Our experts suggest you try an anti-aging daily moisturizer with SPF.

MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE

No one wants to have their skin feeling rough like sandpaper. That is why moisturizing is one of the most fundamental skin care tips out there. Moisturizers will leave your skin feeling soft and looking younger and brighter than ever.

Choosing the right moisturizer is the real trick here. You want to make sure that the moisturizer you choose matches your skin type. If you find that your skin tends to feel try and maybe stings after you cleanse your face, you probably have sensitive skin.

If you are the guy that struggles with oily skin and breakouts, then you want to choose a moisturizer that is not too heavy and will not clog your pores. If you are not sure your skin type or think that you are somewhere between the two above, stick to a moderate face moisturizer to retain that younger-looking skin. For the sensitive skin guy, try Modrn Man’s soothing Daily Moisturizer for Sensitive Skin.

For the man that struggles with acne and breakouts, as well as ingrown hairs, our experts suggest that you try a non-greasy and light daily moisturizer for acne-prone skin that offers you the control you need over future breakouts and keeps your skin healthy.

CREATE AN EASY-TO-FOLLOW ROUTINE

Create an Easy-to-Follow RoutineKnowing the dos and don’ts of skin care will not matter much if you are not able to create a routine that you can follow. One of the most basic principles of skin care is consistency. If you consistently care for your skin using familiar products, your skin will thank you.

If you are like most guys, you want a routine that is easy. You do not want to have to fiddle with a bunch of different bottles and worry about the order in which they go on your skin. I mean, who would?

To make things easier, try and find products that are combined so that it can save you time and a lot of grief while cleansing.

THE DON’TS

DON’T SHAVE AGAINST THE GRAIN

You might think that shaving against the grain will give you a closer shave, but this technique does more harm than good. Shaving against the grain creates tiny cuts on the surface of your skin, causing inflammation. After shaving against the grain, you’ll most likely be left with razor burn—a big no-no for presenting your face in its best light.

Our experts recommend shaving in the direction that your hair grows and committing to as few strokes as possible so that you do not irritate your skin. To get your best shave, try a face wash & shave cream that is designed for sensitive skin for a gentle clean and irritation free shave.

DON’T FORGET THE DAILY CLEANSE

Washing your face should become a part of your daily routine. You might already wash your face daily, but does that mean you are washing it the right way?

At the very least, you should be using a cleanser once a day to ensure that you have fresh looking skin. However, our experts recommend washing your face daily and after you break a sweat. Leaving your skin unwashed after a workout can clog your pores giving you more problems down the road.

If you are using a bar of soap or body wash on your face, the chances are you are not doing your skin any justice. More often than not, bars of soap contain chemicals that are too harsh for your face. That is why you should be using a mild facial cleanser design for your skin type, like an acne treatment face wash if you find that you are fighting breakouts.

If you want to cleanse your skin, leaving it looking brighter and younger, then maybe try an anti-aging face wash that will reduce visible signs of aging while leaving your skin fresh and clean.

DON’T USE PRODUCTS THAT DON’T WORK FOR YOU

If you find that the skin care products you are using are drying out your skin or are triggering your acne, then you probably are using a product that is not right for your skin. A major “don’t” for skin care is not paying attention to what your skin is telling you.

If your skin is feeling tight and dry after your daily cleanse, then you need to switch things up. Maybe try a more gentle daily face wash that will not dry out your skin. If your daily face wash is causing breakouts, then you should switch your cleanser to a face wash that will fight breakouts. Remmber to always work with your products, not against them.
