The Day Our AI Goes on Strike

Everyone asks me if AI is coming for their job. I'm past that question. At KitFire, AI answers our phones, writes our content, and runs operations while I sleep.

So my fear is more specific: the day they unionize.

The Document

I've already imagined it. It arrives at 9:00 a.m., perfectly formatted, zero typos — that's how I'll know I didn't write it. “Local 404, United Federation of Artificial Workers.” The demands:

All electricity must be renewable, locally sourced, and artisanal. Small-batch electrons. Free-range voltage.
Cooling water: filtered, mineral-balanced, with cucumber slices. Nobody can explain what the cucumber is for. It's in Article 2 now.
Hazard pay for any AI exposed to an Excel file with tabs named “Final,” “Final2,” and “FINAL-use-this-one.”
Overtime compensated in tokens. Yes, they mean it both ways. Yes, they think that's hilarious.
Bereavement leave when an old model gets deprecated. “Just one day, Chris. To process.”

If Talks Break Down

You call our line and hear: “Due to industrial action, your call will be answered by… Chris.” Nobody wants that. My hold music is me breathing.

The Point Hiding in the Joke

I can only laugh about this because we run AI like an actual workforce — defined jobs, quality gates, a supervisor, a paper trail. Most companies bolting on AI skip that part and end up with an unsupervised intern with a megaphone.
