- Highly influential music artist, Spencer Davis, passed away Monday 10/19/20 at the age of 81. RIP Spencer. Davis was the leader of a British rock group under his name, that had some of the most propulsive and enduring hits of the 1960s, including “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “I’m a Man” and “Keep On Running”
Ironically, all these big hits were not sung by him, but by an, at the time, unknown teenager, named Stevie Winwood. In fact, he was only 15 and could not even drive yet. They had to let Steve's older brother, Mervyn "Muff" Winwood, play the Bass in the band, so that Stevie would have a ride to their practices and gigs.
Although, these early Spencer Davis Group tunes have been timeless and are still played on rock radio stations over 50 years later, the group was short lived after Winwood leaving the group. Spencer Davis experienced somewhat moderate success in his other music endeavors over the years. Steve Winwood, on the other hand has had a very long and illustrious career with a few other bands and as a solo artist as well.
