Why Housing Is So Unaffordable

Coin Bureau - Why Housing Is So Unaffordable

"Canada has always sold itself as the European cousin of the United States. A country that is just as rich, but safer, fairer, and more stable. But as we head into 2026, that dream has become a nightmare.

The standard of living is plummeting, the youth are fleeing, and the economy is being hollowed out by a crisis that makes the Great Depression look mild.

So today, we’re going to explain why Canada is dying, why its housing bubble has become a national security threat, and why the US might be preparing to foreclose on the country."

This video explains that the global housing market has shifted from a savings based system to a debt based on where homes are treated as leveraged financial assets rather than simple commodities. The narrator describes how deregulation and decades of falling interest rates fuelled a massive rise in prices that now forces many young buyers to take on astronomical debt just to provide exit liquidity for older generations. Institutional investors and corporate landlords are further complicating the market by snapping up supply and using accounting tricks to keep rents high even when units remain empty. The summary suggests that instead of a sudden crash, the market is entering a period of stagnation or neofeudalsm where governments extend mortgage terms to 40 or 50 years to keep the bubble from bursting. Ultimately, the video warns that the housing ladder is broken and encourages viewers to consider alternative hard assets like gold or bitcoin to protect their wealth from a system designed to favour asset owners over wage earners.

It is eye-opening to see how financial engineering and institutional buying have turned the basic need for shelter into a complex global debt trap.
