Anthropic has introduced a major update to its flagship AI assistant, bringing Claude directly inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This first-party integration allows users to access Claude directly within Google’s enterprise productivity apps via a sidebar, as well as open and live-edit Google Workspace files within the Claude web interface.
By embedding its models straight into Google’s primary workflow applications, Anthropic is positioning Claude as a direct competitor to Google’s built-in AI assistant, Gemini.
Previously, Claude could connect to Google Drive to read content, but it lacked the ability to display and edit Docs, Sheets, and Slides side-by-side in real time. With this update, users can approach their work from both directions:
This shift transitions Claude from a standard conversational chatbot into an active AI agent capable of directly manipulating workspace artifacts.
Anthropic has tailored Claude's capabilities specifically for each productivity application:
Google Docs
In Docs, Claude can rewrite sentences or entire headings while preserving existing document formatting. For larger revisions—such as rewriting an executive summary or converting bullet points into tables—Claude presents changes as proposed edits in the sidebar for user review before applying them.
Google Sheets
The integration in Sheets allows Claude to operate as an automated data analyst. Claude can:
Google Slides
In Slides, Claude generates new slides matching the exact layouts and design themes of an existing deck. It also inspects its own visual output to prevent overlapping elements, out-of-bounds text, or legibility issues.
To ensure users retain complete control over their files, Claude offers customisable editing modes:
Anthropic’s move places it squarely in competition with tech giants operating in the enterprise desktop space:
By supporting both Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace, Anthropic is building an overarching AI work layer across the leading enterprise ecosystems.
The Google Workspace add-on brings along Claude’s broader ecosystem, including custom Skills, connectors, and enterprise security controls:
The integration is currently available in public beta across all paid Claude plans, including Enterprise. Administrators can deploy the add-on domain-wide or assign it to specific user groups. Access is included with existing paid plans at no additional charge.
