Threads: A New Era in Text-Based Social Media

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media, a new player has emerged: Threads. Launched by Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, Threads is a conversation-based app that has been compared to Twitter due to its focus on sharing short snippets of text. However, Threads brings its unique features and vision to the table, aiming to create a friendly public space for conversation.

Threads was unveiled on July 5, 2023, after months of speculation and secrecy. The app has been dubbed the "Twitter killer" by tech enthusiasts, with many predicting it to replace the Elon Musk-owned app completely. Threads managed to attract 10 million users within the first few hours of its launch, a feat that took Twitter 780 days to achieve when it went live in 2006.

Threads App

What is Threads?

Threads is a standalone app that requires an Instagram account to sign up. It focuses on sharing short snippets of text, photos, and videos up to five minutes long. The app is available in over 100 countries, with plans to expand further.

The vision for Threads, as stated by Mark Zuckerberg, is to create a friendly public space for conversation. It aims to take what Instagram does best and create a new experience around text, ideas, and discussing what's on your mind.
How to Sign Up for Threads?

Signing up for Threads is simple. All you need is an Instagram account. Once the Threads app is downloaded, it asks users to log in with their Instagram credentials or create an account if they don't already have one. Thanks to the Instagram integration, users don't have to build a following on Threads from scratch. It gives users the option to carry over their followers and following automatically, making it easy to find their friends and favorite accounts.
How Does Threads Differ from Twitter?

While Threads has been compared to Twitter, there are several differences between the two platforms. Unlike Twitter, Threads allows the transfer of users' Instagram followers and the accounts they're following. Posts on Threads can be up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to five minutes in length.
Unlike Twitter, Threads doesn't limit the amount of posts users can consume daily. Threads is a mobile-only platform; users can read posts on Threads.net, but they can't post or interact. Hashtags, a popular feature on Twitter, are not available on Threads. The platform also does not allow its users to search for specific content.

Threads VS Twitter

The Future of Threads

Threads is Meta’s first app envisioned to be compatible with an open social networking protocol. The company plans to make Threads compatible with ActivityPub, the open social networking protocol established by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). This would make Threads interoperable with other apps that also support the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon and WordPress, allowing new types of connections that are not possible on most social apps today.
While it's too early to tell if Threads will replace Twitter completely, it's clear that Threads is a significant new player in the social media landscape. With its unique features and focus on text-based conversation, Threads offers a fresh take on social media interaction. As it continues to evolve and grow, it's worth keeping an eye on this new platform.
