In Spain, the death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has risen dramatically within 24 hours. It increased by almost 30 percent to 767, according to the Ministry of Health. 1107 people are healed.
The number of infections detected grew by around 25 percent to 17,147. It is expected that this number will continue to rise significantly in the next few days because tests for the novel pathogen are now more readily available.
The dead are mostly old people. In old people's homes alone, at least 40 people have died as a result of the coronavirus. Therefore, the homes are to be monitored even better from now on.
In the capital city of Madrid alone, 498 deaths have been reported in connection with the Covid-19 lung disease caused by the virus. With 6777 cases, 40 percent of the infections previously discovered in Spain were detected in Madrid. There were 88 deaths around the metropolis in 24 hours, the newspaper "El País" reported, citing authorities.
Because of the full hospitals in the Madrid region, more than 40 hotels are being converted to hospitals today, so as not to overwhelm the healthcare system in the face of the crisis. Patients are accommodated there who have an easier course of the disease but still need medical care.
Spain, along with China, Italy and Iran, is among the countries most affected by the coronavirus pandemic worldwide. A curfew has been in effect in the country since Saturday to contain the pandemic . According to the police, 48 people have been temporarily arrested in the past 24 hours for violations of the restrictions on freedom of movement.
