Karel Čapek, born (9 January 1890 Malé Svatoňovice– 25 December 1938 Prague) was a Czech writer, intellectual, journalist, playwright, translator and amateur photographer. (from Wikipedia)

Karel Čapek was born 135 years ago but his work speaks volumes to this day.

Though nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times,Čapek never received it. However, several awards commemorate his name, such as the Karel Čapek Prize, awarded every other year by the Czech PEN Club for literary work that contributes to reinforcing or maintaining democratic and humanist values in society. He also played a key role in establishing the Czechoslovak PEN Club as a part of International PEN.

The Munich Agreement in autumn 1938 and subsequent capitulation meant for Karel Čapek the collapse of his previous world and personal tragedy.

He died on Christmas the same year of pneumonia which was complicated by his chronic Bechterev disease. In the same days Gestapo already planned his arresting.

Among many other activities he organized for many years regular Friday meetings in his villa in Praha. Famous Czech personalities met there including president of Czechoslovakia T.G.Masaryk.

Literature work of Karel Čapek is very broad - he wrote dramas,sci-fi, short stories, books for children, travel books... translated also French poetry of Appolinaire, Rimbaud, Baudelaire etc.
