Fascinating capital Brasília

Brasilia became capital of Brazil on 21st April 1960 instead of Rio de Janeiro.
Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira (JK) (12. September 1902 - 22.August 1976) was a Brazilian politician and president of Brazil from 1956 to 1961. One of the results of his reign was the project of the new capital of Brasilia, which stands in the center of the country.
Kubitschek received his surname from his mother Julia Kubitschek (1873-1973), married to de Oliveira, a teacher. Her grandfather Jan Kubíček at the beginning of the 19th century(sometime before 1830) emigrated to Brazil from the Třeboň estate in southern Bohemia.(Czech republic now). (Kubíček is a typical Czech name).

Brasília is the capital of Brazil. It lies deep inland, about 1000 km northwest of Rio de Janeiro. In 2016, more than 3 million people lived in the city and its surrounding agglomeration (i.e. in the Federal District), making Brasília the fourth largest city in Brazil after São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. Soon after the country gained independence, the idea of building a new capital was born (in 1822). Together with this proposal, a name was proposed for this city-it was to be called just Brasília. In the constitution, this idea was registered since 1891. However, the implementation of the project occurred only in 1954, when the preparatory work began.

Brasília was a planned city developed by Lúcio Costa, Oscar Niemeyer and Joaquim Cardozo in 1956 in a scheme to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The city has a unique status in Brazil, as it is an administrative division rather than a legal municipality like other cities in Brazil. Oscar Niemeyer was the chief architect of most public buildings. A follower and great promoter of the ideas of Le Corbusier, he is considered one of the most influential figures in international modern architecture. The urban design of the communal apartment blocks was based on Le Corbusier's Ville Radieuse of 1935, and the superblocks on the North American Radburn layout from 1929. One of the main objectives of the plan was to allow the free flow of automobile traffic, the plan included lanes of traffic in a north–south direction.

Brasília became famous precisely because of Niemeyer's modern buildings, the most famous of which are the government buildings, the residence of the president and, above all, the cathedral. No wonder the city is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
