Sorting is the key
Not everything you pick belongs in the cellar or pantry. Before storing, take the time to inspect each fruit. Separately, set aside apples that have bruises or scratches – eat or process them as soon as possible. Only store healthy, undamaged pieces for longer periods. A few rotten apples are enough to easily ruin the entire box.

Which varieties last the longest
Not every apple is suitable for storage. Early summer varieties, which ripen in July, are more suitable for immediate consumption. For winter, it is worth reaching for late varieties, such as Golden Delicious, Jonagold, Ontario or Idared. These fruits have firmer flesh and naturally have a longer shelf life.

What to do if you live in an apartment? You can also store apples there. Find a cooler place - for example, a glazed loggia, a pantry on the north wall or an unheated hallway. It is important that the temperature does not fluctuate too much. You can also store apples in smaller quantities in the refrigerator, ideally in the vegetable compartment.
Extra tips
Don't store apples with vegetables that release a strong aroma, such as onions or garlic. Don't put them with potatoes - apples accelerate their germination. If possible, separate different varieties. Each ripens at a different rate.
