Nutrition in autumn

Autumn time and your health

Many people these days try to eat healthily. But they don't always do it right.

They mainly think about limiting fats and sugars, which is important.

At the same time, it is also necessary to provide the body with important nutrients and other substances.

During this autumn period sufficient vitamins and minerals are extremely important. They strengthen immunity, improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it is good to provide the body with the missing substances through food supplements. What to focus on?

The basis is magnesium. Most people don't get enough of it from their diet. It is responsible for proper muscle function, nerve impulse conduction, DNA stabilization, and good sleep. However, to get the necessary amount, which is set at 300 to 420 mg for an adult, you would have to eat, for example, less than a kilo of brown rice, three and a half kilos of apricots, or 136 g of almonds every day. And that is beyond human ability. Therefore, supplement it by drinking mineral water with magnesium content.

Another element that is generally lacked is calcium. This mineral is a key component of our bones and teeth. If its level in the bloodstream is disrupted, the body begins to release it from the bones, causing them to thin. Vegans and people with lactose intolerance should be especially vigilant, as they do not have enough dairy products in their diet, which are the main source of this nutrient.

Copper is also very important. People often underestimate it. More and more studies show that copper plays a crucial role in minimizing the manifestations of risks associated with, for example, diabetes or heart disease.

In addition, it also participates in the formation of collagen and is essential for the healthy appearance of the skin.

It occurs naturally in sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, and less popular ingredients such as offal. You can also indulge in seafood.

However, it is recommended to take all of the above-mentioned elements in the form of food supplements.

Melody Christie Magnesium is a tricky one. I suppose we have to go by what we believe our body needs immediate help with first. As for the Amazon issue, it\'s called "co-mingled inventory". This video offers a better explanation than I did and he even shows some real and fake products side-by-side. It seems the best thing to do would be to buy from the manufacturer or their official store. Video :

M H Thanks Simon and Melody for your comments. I am surprised, Melody, the Walmar/Amazon products can be mixed. That is not good. I myself buy magnesium either directly in pharmacy or in some online shop specialized on different health products. I had a look and found this:"The three forms of magnesium that are highly absorbable in supplements often include malate, bisglycinate, and citrate, or malate, bisglycinate, and threonate. These organic forms are better absorbed than, for example, inorganic magnesium oxide. Each form has specific benefits—bisglycinate is good for the nervous system and sleep, malate for energy and muscles, threonate for cognitive function, and citrate is very effective but can have laxative effects in higher doses." So it is not simple what to choose ! :-)

Simon Keighley This is a great reminder that focusing on specific minerals like magnesium, calcium, and copper is just as vital as limiting fats and sugars for good autumn health. Great info, thanks for sharing, Margaret.

Melody Christie You’re absolutely right — getting enough magnesium from diet alone is pretty much impossible. Supplements are definitely a smart option, though it’s worth taking the time to research and choose a trusted, reliable provider. I recently came across a post explaining that when Walmart/Amazon ship products directly from their own warehouses, some items from different sources — including counterfeit ones — can get mixed together under the same brand listing, making it harder to tell which are genuine as the packaging for both are almost identical.
